North East Lincolnshire Council’s cabinet yesterday (Wednesday 6 October) accepted additional funding of more than £300,000 from the Department for Transport’s Capability Fund to continue the ongoing efforts to improve sustainable travel across the area.

The funding will allow for a number of projects to continue next year with the aim to:

  • Improve access to education, training and employment opportunities
  • Improve health and wellbeing through cycling and walking
  • Reduce carbon emissions across North East Lincolnshire
  • Widen opportunities to access sustainable travel in the borough

Working to meet these aims will see the return of popular Doctor Bike and Be Safe, Be Seen events alongside ongoing promotion and initiatives with Love to Ride, R-evolution and Cycle Hub Lincs, plus the chance to take part in an E-Bike loan scheme due to start in the coming months.

Transport officials will also continue their travel planning projects with residents, businesses and educational providers, alongside additional data gathering to support strategic modelling and assessments to support future funding opportunities.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “While we remain committed to delivering the infrastructure required to support the behavioural shift to sustainable travel, it is vital that we continue to secure funding like this to allow for the continuation of the behavioural and education projects to support the transition to cleaner and greener travel.

“I am delighted we will be able to continue offering residents and businesses opportunities to allow them to experience and consider the sustainable transport options available to them and I look forward to the events continuing into next year.”
