Doctor Bike visited both Pilgrim Academy in Immingham and Reynolds Academy in Cleethorpes where they fixed and repaired more than 80 children’s’ bikes for free.
This service is provided by non-profit organisation Cycle Hub Lincs and is funded by North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner EQUANS.
Having Doctor Bike come to schools helps to encourage students to travel more environmentally friendly to and from school knowing they have a bike that is in a safe and working order.
Alex from Doctor Bike emphasised the importance of a bike working properly and encouraged parents to regularly check their child’s bikes, as they cannot only be dangerous, but ultimately cost more to repair later if left untreated.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “We’re happy to help people get on their bike where they can and that includes schools. It’s a great way to encourage children to travel more actively whilst reducing traffic congestion during busy school times.”
Kayleigh Morley, Vice Principal of Pilgrim Academy, said: “Doctor Bike came in last week and they were amazing. The team that came were incredibly professional and it was really beneficial for the children and supporting their bike repairs. The team fixed nearly 40 bikes throughout the day and the children commented on the difference it made to their bikes, particularly their brakes. I will definitely be asking if they can come back!”
Rebecca Scott, Principal of Reynolds Academy, said: “We took part in this event as we are trying to encourage as many children as possible to walk and cycle to school, so it’s really important that the bikes they are using are safe. The event generated a lot of excitement amongst the children and we were really pleased to see so many bikes in school on the day. At the end of the day, we had lots of happy children with working brakes and properly inflated tyres. We are hoping to run a similar event in Spring next year.”
