Over the summer, householders in North East Lincolnshire have been contacted about completing the authority’s annual canvass.

By law, people are required to make sure everything on the electoral roll relating to their household is correct – this is done via the annual canvass.

Wrong information could result in people losing voting rights, as well as missing out on benefits such as improved credit scores and easier mortgage, loan or phone contract applications.

From September 1 there will be reminders for those who have not yet taken part in the canvass with people encouraged to complete the form online instead of the paper one sent to them.

In England, if you’re aged 16 or above and are a British or EU citizen with a permanent address, or a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission, then you can register to vote in UK elections. However, you cannot vote until you are 18. There are two easy steps:

  1. Respond to the household form and follow instructions provided.
  2. If you are not registered to vote or your details have changed, you can register for free at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. You will need your national insurance number and date of birth to register.
