Help the children in your community feel safe on their way to and from school

The School Streets pilot scheme, aimed at improving road safety for pupils outside four schools in North East Lincolnshire, will be introduced on Monday 7 November.

This will be carried out through a phased approach. The first phase, which starts on Monday 7 November, will be to engage with residents and parents in the school area to promote the pilot scheme.

In the coming weeks, signs will be erected on the school’s streets as part of the next phase.

The final phase of this scheme will see traffic marshals and barriers introduced to restrict vehicular movement during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Each of the four schools will have different operational times, therefore please visit nelincs.gov.uk/school-streets to find out when access will be restricted during the school’s drop-off and pick-up times.

We continue to seek interest from volunteers who would wish to support and be part of this scheme. Therefore, volunteers are invited to help ensure School Streets runs smoothly.

The School Streets initiative aims to work alongside the public to keep everyone safe, therefore we are looking for volunteers to assist in marshalling during the closures.

Councillor Margaret Cracknell, portfolio holder for children and education, added: “Volunteers will make a huge impact on families in the area by actively working to reduce accidents and making children feel safer. The scheme also encourages children to walk to school, so will increase the amount of exercise some children get each day and improve their health and wellbeing.”

All volunteers will receive training, a handbook, high visibility clothing and a DBS check to ensure they are equipped to hit the ground running.
