New Council cameras continue to catch criminals at work

DRUG dealing, fighting and robbery are among the incidents captured on CCTV cameras in recent months, helping the Police to respond quickly.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s Close Circuit TV Network, which has recently undergone a £2.2 million upgrade, is managed by Equans and supports the work of Police and Council officers in keeping residents safe.

Between March and April 2023, ten pieces of footage relating to instances of crime and anti-social behaviour were passed to Humberside Police.

Cameras captured:

  • One instance of a fight
  • An instance of assault
  • A serious assault
  • A knife-point robbery
  • Footage relating to a murder investigation
  • Footage relating to a break-in at a pub
  • A robbery
  • A brick thrown through a car window
  • Footage relating to a robbery
  • A drug deal

The network of cameras was also used to help identify the movements of a young person who was missing.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities in North East Lincolnshire, said:

“The CCTV network really does play an active part in the detection and prevention of crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Our partners in the Police work closely with out control room to identify, track and apprehend offenders, and to track down vulnerable and missing persons too.

“In this round, there was an instance whereby officers were moving to prevent a robbery-in-progress, and our camera operatives tracked the movements of the Police to keep them safe and feed them intelligence.

“This network of cameras is a fantastic tool for keeping people safe and I’m pleased to see that it continues to pay dividends.”

97 existing CCTV cameras have been upgraded and an additional 61 cameras have been introduced.
