Citizenship ceremonies

You need to attend a citizenship ceremony if you’re 18 or over and have successfully applied to become a British citizen.

What to expect

You’ll have to make an oath of allegiance (or an affirmation if you prefer not to swear by God) and a pledge. This means you promise to respect the rights, freedoms and laws of the UK.

At the end of the ceremony you’ll be presented with your certificate of British citizenship and a welcome pack.

When do I need to book?

The ceremony must take place within three months of the application being granted.

The register office receives notification from the Home Office of the granting of citizenship for people who have requested a ceremony in North East Lincolnshire.

Young people

Those under 18 do not have to take part in ceremonies, but they may attend along with their families and be included in the formalities.

Types of ceremonies

New citizens are required to attend a ceremony once the documentation has been received from the Home Office confirming citizenship has been granted.

If you are a new citizen, it is your responsibility to contact the office to book in for your ceremony (call 01472 326295 option 2). There is no fee for attending the standard group ceremony however, a private ceremony would incur an additional fee.
