New lighting will soon be adorning the skies of Grimsby Town centre as the Council look to help brighten up the street.

Victoria Street West will be getting into the festive spirit with its festoon lighting hanging from Riverhead Square all the way down to St. James Square.

This type of lighting refers to large, exposed bulbs hanging from a cable. The installation is part of the Greening Up Our Town Centre initiative, funded by the High Street Accelerator Fund.

This has allowed Grimsby Town centre to be rejuvenated in recent weeks and months with blossoming planters, benches and a wall art installation.

Further works will now look to build upon the impressive work already undertaken along the street. Throughout the coming weeks, contractors will be attaching brackets to the walls before stringing the lights for all to see.

This year-round installation will create a safer and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors to the centre, adding another element to what is fast becoming a reimagined street.

Aside from the physical elements, the project has also looked to educate the younger generation about the transformation of Grimsby and its high street. Littlecoates School were invited to see the changes and even put their own stamp on the area by designing several signs.

Councillor Philip Jackson, Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economy, Regeneration, Devolution and Skills, said: “This is yet another great addition to our high street and I’m thrilled to see the street reimagined and full of life.

“This is just one small part of the regeneration scheme now taking place. This is one of the most ambitious schemes this council has ever undertaken. With significant public investment, we’re transforming our town centre to create places where people want to live, work, and visit.”

The council thanks in advance for your patience and co-operation during these important works, and assure that the work will be completed as quickly and safely as possible.
