Wraparound Childcare Programme
In Spring 2023, the government announced a national wraparound programme. The aim is to support all working families to access wraparound childcare from 8am to 6pm, in their local area or on their school site.
Wraparound childcare is childcare that ‘wraps around’ the conventional school day. It is:
- For primary-aged school children
- Weekdays from 8am to 6pm, during term-time only
- OFSTED registered childcare
- Provided by your local school or a childcare provider (this includes private settings and childminders)
Information for parents and carers
Paying for wraparound childcare
Wraparound childcare must be paid for by parents and carers. Your child’s school or private provider will have further information on their pricing structure
There are discounts and benefits you can access to help with paying for your childcare costs, including:
- Tax-free childcare – This will save eligible parents up to £2,000 per year per child for children aged up to 11 (working 16 hours or more a week), or £4,000 per year per child for children aged up to 17 with disabilities.
- Universal Credit Childcare – Eligible parents can claim up to 85% of their childcare costs for children aged up to 16.

Finding wraparound childcare
Contact your school to find out what is available. You can also check the Family Information Service for local childcare providers who may be able to help.
If childcare between 8am and 6pm is not yet available do:
- ask your school how they will be expanding wraparound childcare
- explain what days and times you need
Your right to request
Parents have a right to request that schools consider providing wraparound childcare for children from reception up to the end of key stage 3 (year 9) and up to age 18 for disabled children. You can make the request to the school your child attends.
Schools should set out clearly the timetable and process parents need to follow and how they will respond. Parents should make requests in writing. This can be by letter or email or via school-run parent surveys. Schools should log all requests from parents and keep a record of the date to monitor how up to date this information is.
