Care Plus Group’s Community Inpatient Unit (CIU), located on Peterhouse Road in Grimsby, plays a vital role in supporting people across North East Lincolnshire providing reablement and recovery to support independence and wellbeing.

The CIU provides short‑term inpatient provision for rehabilitation and reablement to individuals who require a period of intense rehab or clinical care following illness, trauma, or step down from Acute Care. The unit acts as a crucial step between hospital and home – helping people regain independence, mobility, and confidence.

Formerly known as Cambridge Park, the CIU is a 24‑hour, seven‑day‑a‑week service, staffed by a highly skilled multi‑disciplinary team of:

  • Recovery workers
  • Healthcare assistants (HCAs)
  • Nurses
  • Social workers
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Technical instructors
  • Cooks and housekeeping staff
  • Administration and reception teams

This dedicated team works collaboratively with GPs, community nurses, hospital colleagues, Adult Social Care, and family members to ensure each person receives coordinated, person‑centred support.

The CIU is commissioned by the Humber and North Yorkshire ICB (HNYICB) and is jointly funded by the HNYICB and North East Lincolnshire Council to ensure those in North East Lincolnshire who require reablement in a bed-based setting are supported to achieve their desired outcomes.

James Skivington, Unit Manager, explains: “We typically support people who are recovering from an illness or injury. They come to us for a period of time – ranging from a week to a couple of months – and we support them with therapy, activities of daily living, ongoing clinical care and ensuring any help they may need is in place for their return home. Our aim is always to help people recover safely and get back to where they want to be.”

Nicola McVeigh, Assistant Director for Transformation and Integration, added: “The CIU enables people to regain their independence, avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, and return home with the right support in place. The service is designed with the belief that individuals are experts in their own recovery journey, along with their informal carers/family members, and staff work alongside them to achieve their personal reablement goals.”

Andy Knowles broke his hip after suffering a fall when he had a stroke. Following an operation and a long stay in hospital, he was discharged to the CIU for rehabilitation and reablement support. “I get a lot of help here because I couldn’t walk when I came here,” he said. “But due to the help of the staff, I’m getting there, walking, learning how to do steps, and hopefully I’ll be home soon.” Andy spent a month in the CIU before returning home.

The unit currently offers 44 beds and provides rehabilitation for a wide range of needs, including physical recovery, mobility support, post‑illness rehabilitation, and specialist support for older adults or those with long‑term conditions.

Care Plus Group remains committed to delivering quality community‑based care and strengthening patient pathways that help reduce hospital pressures while supporting people closer to home.
