North East Lincolnshire Council’s CCTV has been playing a major role in Humberside Police’s initiative against poor drivers.
Operation Snap was launched by Humberside Police up in April 2023 following a national pilot. Designed to enable the public to submit visual evidence of poor or careless driving through dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage (from a passenger), it covers a range of offences such as running red lights and not wearing a seatbelt.
In an effort to improve the safety on our roads, North East Lincolnshire Council’s CCTV system is aiding Op Snap by submitting its own footage when operatives witness a driving offence occurring.
Since January, the Council has submitted evidence 361 times to Operation Snap with numerous submissions leading to formal action against drivers, including education schemes, points and financial penalties and finally court if deemed proportionate.
The CCTV system was introduced in 2022 as part of a £2.25 million overhaul to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour across North East Lincolnshire. The 132 cameras cover all major towns and villages throughout the borough to ensure all residents are kept as safe as possible.
“This partnership approach is essential in reducing all crime, not just in respects to careless driving,” said Councillor James Sawkins, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities.
“The amount of incidents that our teams have captured shows the need for such an initiative and I’m proud to say the Council is aiding the work to make our streets safe for everyone.
“These numbers are only for six months of the year and we are committed to helping the police in the next six and beyond.”
He added: “This isn’t Big Brother watching over everyone, this is about all major organisations utilising their resources to improve the lives of residents as best we can.”
PC Andy Place, Roads Policing lead for Operation Snap, said: “Every submission we receive through the Operation Snap portal is reviewed by an experienced Roads Policing officer. We assess each incident and consider the most appropriate outcome – whether that is engagement with the driver, education to encourage safer behaviour, or prosecution where the evidence supports it.
“The public can upload footage safely and securely through our online portal. This evidence regularly plays a vital role in holding drivers to account and securing convictions for a range of road-traffic offences.
“Operation Snap has one clear aim: to make our roads safer. By working together with the public, we can tackle poor driving behaviour, reduce collisions, and protect all road users.”
