With the school holidays upon us, what better way to celebrate the green spaces on our doorstep than with a series of family activities to mark Love Parks Week 2025 throughout Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

The new Cleethorpes Coastal Ranger, Josh Forrester, who has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will be accompanied by a team from North East Lincolnshire Council as they host free events at various parks throughout the Borough from Friday July 25 to Thursday July 31.

The events will not only showcase what is available in our parks for children and families, but also highlight the environmental value of these local landmarks.

Love Parks Week is a national initiative that takes place every year and is organised by  Keep Britain Tidy to celebrate the importance of our green spaces. This year it runs for 10 days from July 25 to August 3.

Local activities will include bug hunting, pond dipping, wildlife walks and butterfly counting. Each park will have different activities, giving children a great opportunity to get out and enjoy our green spaces during the school holidays.

As the weather has been very warm, people are urged to remember to take along plenty of water, and sunhats and suncream, if applicable. You should also wear sturdy footwear. Children will receive certificates for taking part in the activities.

Join Josh and the NELC Ecology Team at the following locations:

  • Friday 25th July, from 10am to 12pm, at West Marsh Country Park (///flows.broad.roses) for a Wildflower Walk, Bug Hunt and Butterfly Count, followed by 1pm-2pm at Grimsby in Bloom, Duke of York Gardens (///spared.focal.eager) for Pond Dipping and Butterfly Count.

Cllr Henry Hudson, NELC Portfolio Holder for the Environment, urged people to take full advantage of the events to celebrate our parks. He said:

“We are so lucky to have so much natural beauty on our doorstep here in North East Lincolnshire. It is not just the wonderful beach and the nature reserve, but also the many fabulous parks that provide outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy.

“If you don’t go along to your local park very often, or you fancy seeing one of the other parks in the town that you haven’t visited before, then please go along to these events. Love Parks Week is a fantastic way to celebrate the enormous value that outdoor spaces bring to our mental and physical well-being.

“We have some beautiful and historical parks that truly feed the soul and our new Coastal Ranger will be on hand to give you an insight into the importance of the environmental impact these green spaces bring to our region.

“The summer holidays can be difficult for parents to find ways of entertaining  their children, but these free events will be great fun and a little bit educational too.”

Along with the special events taking part in these five local parks, there will also be all of the usual activities available at the many other parks in the Borough. These include tennis courts and football pitches, children’s playgrounds and a wide range of summer activities organised by local community groups.
