Former bank ‘down docks’ to be transformed thanks to heritage funding

A once bustling bank on the Port of Grimsby is to be transformed into state-of-the-art offices

Known previously as the Midland Bank, Ice and Ocean and Ocean House the iconic building will be returned to its former glory through the PSiCA (Partnership Scheme in Conservation Areas) scheme.

The PSiCA scheme aims to support the regeneration of a collection of historic buildings on the Port of Grimsby, such as the now renovated Alfred Enderby’s smokehouse and The Great Escape. The former Midland Bank, on Fish Dock Road, will be the latest in a long line of projects to help retain the heritage associated with these buildings.

Originally used as a bank for many businesses, the building is nestled between the well-known Solly’s Café and Tom Taylor’s, a prime location. It’s now set for a new lease of life.

During the renovation work, the PSiCA funding includes the restoration of the shop front (back to the 1934 appearance), window repairs, brickwork repairs and re-pointing, and roof and rainwater goods repair. 

In addition, the tenant will be carrying out a full programme of internal repairs such as new floors, kitchenette, toilets, ground floor office and an architect studio on the first floor.

Other buildings have been completely transformed thanks to PSiCA funding over the years. For example, The Great Escape, run by Creative Start CIC, were awarded a grant for external repairs including new windows and traditional signwriting, and Alfred Enderby’s have used PSiCA funding, along with other grants, for works to the former Marconi building next door to expand their business, enabling demonstrations, workshops and tours.
