The latest drone flight over the Freshney Place leisure scheme has been released from contractors, GMI, which shows the extent of the demolition work that’s been done ahead of the start of the build of the leisure scheme in the coming months.

GMI’s latest newsletter has outlined the progress made as they look for a 2027 completion of the project to transform the western end of the shopping centre.

Since starting on site, GMI have completed the demolition of the old Market Hall and the BHS floor slabs and almost completed the demolition of Flottergate units.  Alongside this, they have converted three retail units in the centre for site welfare for the workers on site and worked with external agencies to complete the disconnection of gas and electricity mains where needed.

The next few months will see the removal of the old Market Hall concrete floor, as well as finishing the rest of the Flottergate demolition. Piling works will also start for the new cinema and leisure centre.

Cllr Philip Jackson, leader of the Council, said: “Works are really progressing well on the scheme, and I’m looking forward to seeing the next stage. The piling works really signal the start of the new build. Along with the other works in the town centre, it’s a busy place at the moment!”
