THE six-month closure of Garth Lane footbridge will take effect from Monday, September 28, as work begins to replace it with a showcase five-metre-wide structure.
The closure is to enable the removal of the existing bridge. Extensive works will then take place to enable its replacement with detailed abutment work needed for the new bridge before it is lifted into position.
At the same time, a major civil engineering project will see a new tiered step area down to the river installed, and further slipway work. The heavy machinery and plant on site to carry out the required sheet piling and excavation also requires the footway closure.
With diversion signs for pedestrians taking them along Alexandra Road to cross to and from Frederick Ward Way, the Council’s Head of Regeneration Cllr John Fenty said he appreciated this was a longer pedestrian and cycling route for some.
“As with any development, this work will cause inconvenience to some and we do apologise. However, the new bridge and the associated work around Garth Lane is going to completely transform the area,” he said.
“The new structure is five-metres wide and will help support future developments north of the Freshney. It is also a real feature. Six months will soon pass, and we will have something here, in the heart of Grimsby, that everyone can enjoy,” he added.
The process to gain planning permission is now in process with detailed designs of the new bridge due to be released to the public very shortly.
Once in place the structure will be complemented by a whole new look for the area as part of the overall £3.5m project. This is supported by £1.3m secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership from the Local Growth Fund as part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse, and The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government with funding released as a result of the Grimsby Town Deal. The overall work is being managed by North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner, ENGIE.
New paving, lighting, landscaping, and seating – with fish-shaped benches upcycled from the felled willow tree – will also form part of the overall new look. Extra security in the form of CCTV will make the area a safer place for individuals and families to enjoy.
