Meridian Showground will host the largest military and emergency vehicle display on the east coast as part of Armed Forces Weekend in Cleethorpes.
With up to 60 vehicles on display, from the heavy Chieftain tank to the smallest parachute bike and all sorts of vehicles in between, there’s plenty to come enjoy, look around and even sit in! There will also be a 6wheeled DUWK (known as a “duck”) on display that has recently returned from Normandy.
On the Emergency Service vehicles side, there’s a Dennis F12 Fire appliance pump escape from the 1950s, vintage ambulances, an armoured police Landrover and the ever popular Morris Minor “Moggie” 1000 police “panda” car, as well as displays and support from the present day emergency and military services along with cadets and service charities.
Lots of the vehicles will also be taking part in the Military vehicle parade on Saturday 27 June that starts at the Pier at 11.15am. Parade route: Central Prom, Kingsway, Kings Road, Meridian Showground.
Over the weekend there will also be displays in the showground from the services – including a small arms firepower display on Saturday afternoon.
The military village will also host some of the armed forces charities, including one of the main sponsors for the event, SSAFA.
Chris Shaw, one of the voluntary Armed Forces Team who organise the weekend, said: “The weekend is always really well supported, and it’s great to have so many vehicles here this year to show support for our armed forces, past and present.”
The Armed Forces weekend in Cleethorpes kicks off later this week, with Saturday and Sunday being the main days of activity. Meridian Showground is open on Friday at 12noon to 6pm, Saturday from 10am to 7pm, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
To get to Meridian Showground, there is a free shuttle bus running between it and the leisure centre through the day each day. Donations welcome on board to SHOPS (South Humberside Omnibus Preservation Society).
The Saturday night headline at the stage is the fabulous Twist and Shout Show – a celebration of all things 1960s. You can get your tickets up to Wednesday this week at Blighty’s at the Knoll on Knoll St in Cleethorpes, or at the weekend from Meridian Showground box office.
