One of the oldest war veterans in Grimsby has praised a weekend that was full of celebration and support for the Armed Forces.

Jack Hinchliffe, 103, served in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. Originally from Filey in Yorkshire, Jack has spent a number of decades in Grimsby and is well known for his war efforts as well as his love of Grimsby Town Football Club.

Having joined the army in his 40s, Jack toured across the world visiting countries like Egypt, France and Norway. For Jack, the weekend wasn’t just about celebrating, it’s also about paying respects to friends lost during the war.

This year, he watched the Military Parade from a spot on Alexandra Road as tanks, jeeps and troops came past and saluted the dignitaries outside the Knoll.

In Honour of Cleethorpes being announced as the National Armed Forces Event, the Minister of Defence, the Rt Hon John Healey MP, attended the event as one of the dignitaries, along with members of the Armed Forces and the Council. For Jack, the weekend is about remembering some of the better times he had in the army too.

He said: “It’s great to be here and it brings back lovely memories of my five years during the Second World War. I feel really proud that I can be here at the age of 103. There are many people who were in war who are no longer here so I come for them too.

“I also lay a wreath at Grimsby Cenotaph every Remembrance Sunday in memory of those we’ve lost. For me, I do it to remember my friend Billy Harrison who was involved in a bombing raid over Germany. He asked if he could land for fuel, was denied, and sadly crashed his plane.”

Stories like these are poignant reminders of why Armed Forces celebrations are so important. The weekend is not only about celebrating what they have achieved, but also thanking them for their sacrifices.

Speaking about the weekend’s events, he added: “It’s terrific to see everyone supporting the armed forces, people turn out for the RAF, Army and the Navy, not just one. It’s terrific to see so many people in Cleethorpes all for the same thing.”

Councillor Hayden Dawkins, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy, said: “I would like to start by saying thank you to Jack for his efforts during the war and for coming to the Armed Forces Weekend to join in with the celebrations.

“It’s great to see so many veterans attend the event; getting the recognition they deserve from the crowds.”
