The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Steve Beasant, is helping to keep the streets of North East Lincolnshire clean by embarking on a 24 hour litter pick.

Urging people to stop being a fool, the event will be taking place on Tuesday, 1 April, to Wednesday, 2 April, with Mr. Mayor spending time in each of the 15 wards.

He hopes to raise money for his four chosen charities Nurtrio, Friendship at Home, YMCA and Jax’s Stoma Appeal as he enters the last few months of his role as mayor.

He said: “I’m now on my final countdown as mayor and thinking about maximising what time I have left to help my chosen charities as much as I can.

“They all mean a great deal to me.” He added: “To do as much as I can, I’ve decided to do a 24 hour litter pick across all the wards in North East Lincolnshire.

“I’ll be starting in Immingham on April Fool’s Day before working my way through the borough. I hope that by doing the litter pick it’ll help instil some community spirit and help make the borough a cleaner place.

“By doing these sorts of events, we can make North East Lincolnshire even more great than it already is.”

Although physically demanding, Mr. Mayor is ready and raring to go. “I walk 20,000 steps a day and I’ve done a 24 hour walk around Grant Thorold park before so the physical side is not something I’m apprehensive about.

“I’m over 70 years old, but I keep myself active and don’t let my age stop me from doing anything.”

With his tenure as mayor approaching an end, he’s hoping to sign off with a flourish. “I just want to do everything I can for these charities before my time as mayor ends.

“I’m so proud of the area I was born and bred in and if I can do something to help it then I will. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
