Paul’s stop smoking story: ‘I didn’t think smoking was slowing me down — until I quit’

Smoking

Paul, 48, from Immingham

After 25 years on the factory floor, Paul was used to tough shifts, long hours, and grabbing a smoke whenever he could.

“I always thought I was managing fine. You get your head down, have a smoke on break, and crack on. That’s just how it’s always been.”

But the little things started adding up — the morning cough, the breathlessness after climbing a few stairs, the feeling that he was running on empty.

“I used to think I was just knackered from work. I didn’t link it to the smoking at all.”

It was becoming a grandad that made him think differently.

“When my grandson started running about, I struggled to keep up. I thought, ‘If I don’t sort myself out now, I’m not gonna be around for as long as I want to be.’”

When Paul’s company shared information about the Swap to Stop service, he decided it was time to give it a go.

“They sorted me out with a free vape and nicotine patches, and proper support – none of that’ you’re doing it wrong’ attitude. It was all about helping you do it your way.”

Within a few months, Paul had switched fully to vaping, used the patches to manage cravings, and then quit altogether with help from the Wellbeing Service.

“You don’t realise how much smoking takes out of you until you’re free of it. I’ve got more puff, I’m saving a load of cash — and I’m back kicking a ball about with my grandkids instead of watching from the bench.”

“It’s not about giving things up — it’s about making sure you’re here for what matters.”
