North East Lincolnshire Council is once again encouraging shoppers to take advantage of free parking in many of its car parks for Small Business Saturday UK.

As part of the national initiative, the majority of the council’s car parks will offer free parking on Saturday 5 December as part of the annual UK-wide campaign.

The council is waiving charges for this day only and no ticket is required to be displayed.

The day was introduced to support local retailers and encourage spending with small, independent businesses that have less than 50 employees.

Now in its eighth year in the UK, the campaign has grown significantly each year, with an estimated £800m spent in small businesses across the UK in the 2019’s Small Business Saturday, with a record turnout of 17.6 million people choosing to shop small on the day.

Councillor John Fenty, portfolio holder for regeneration and skills, said: “We’re delighted to once again be able to continue our support for small, independent businesses in North East Lincolnshire, especially after the difficult year they, and many others, have had due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Supporting small local businesses is something we encourage throughout the year, but now more than ever, I’d urge as many people as possible to stay loyal to local and shop at small businesses in North East Lincolnshire.

“By spending just some of your weekly shopping budget with a local business, you can make a huge impact on the local economy and on that small business.”

Business owners can visit www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com to register their business on the website and download their marketing pack.

Businesses can also use the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK within their own social media channels to help amplify the shop small message.
