A new year can be a fresh start for a lot of people, offering the chance to different approach to work, hobbies and habits, but January can also come with challenges.

Financial difficulties, bereavement and family challenges can all cause our mental health to take a knock, and public health officials are encouraging people to consider their mental health when setting a new year’s resolution.

According to Mind, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England .

Councillor Stan Shreeve, Deputy Leader for North East Lincolnshire Council and portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care, said:

“Self-care is vital in keeping ourselves in shape both mentally and physically.

“It’s important to establish a routine in your life. This can really introduce some stability to your life.

“Staying physically active is another great way of looking after your mental health as well as your physical health. Getting out and exercising can really boost your mood and reduce stress.

“Prioritising a healthy amount of sleep in that routine can help your brain to function properly.

“Finally, I cannot recommend enough surrounding yourself with other people. We are social creatures, so going out with friends for a walk and a natter will give you that connection and improve your sense of support.

“If you are feeling low and need someone to talk to, please seek support.”
