Record sound, build Grimsby or create works of art using LEGO® bricks/pieces/elements. Sound interesting? Then make sure to take part in Brick Futures.

Organised by Unseen Arts and hosted by the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre in partnership with CreateNEL, the project invites children and young people to imagine the future of our borough made from plastic bricks.

Running from December 2025 to May 2026, the programme will celebrate people’s work with a community exhibition in the Muriel Baker gallery from April to May next year.

Through several workshops led by artists and designers, participants will explore the borough’s past, present and future and developing a range of skills through different mediums:

Workshops include:

  • Stop-motion animation & digital animation
Building LEGO® models that transform into animated stories about NEL’s heritage and future ambitions.
  • LEGO® brick printmaking & ceramic relief tiles
Using bricks as tools for print and clay to create bold visual artworks inspired by local identity.
  • Brick soundscapes
Recording and composing sound using LEGO® pieces, capturing the rhythms, energy and spirit of the borough.
  • Creative build sessions with LEGO® bricks/pieces/elements
Playful, community-led building days celebrating imagination, belonging, and local pride.

The final exhibition will display a range of the models built and have a digital element showcasing the stop motion and sounds made throughout the project.

Louise Bowen, Senior Curator at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, said: “We’re thrilled to be helping a local organisation develop skills in the younger generation.

“LEGO® pieces are something people of all ages know and love and I can’t wait to see what is created.”

Natasha Morley, Creative Director of Unseen Arts, added: “This programme combines LEGO with meaningful creative skill-building; from animation and sound design to printmaking and ceramics. It’s exciting to see young people discovering new talents while exploring what shapes our borough. Brick Futures invites them to imagine futures, identities and connections to place that feel bold, hopeful and entirely their own.”

Councillor Hayden Dawkins, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Visitor Economy, added: “This is a great use of the Council’s assets to help local organisations better not only themselves but also the residents.” For more information and to sign up to the workshops, visit https://unseenarts.co.uk/brick-futures
