COUNCILLORS have unanimously backed a transformational Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in North East Lincolnshire.

Adopted at Full Council on Thursday 12 December, following  Cabinet approval the previous day, the strategy sets out a clear vision for a fairer, healthier borough, where everyone has the opportunity to live longer, happier lives.

The strategy is a call to action, focusing on the things that truly shape health: good jobs, safe homes, strong communities, and a healthy environment. It builds on the Marmot principles adopted by the local authority earlier this year.

Deputy leader of the Council, and portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care, Councillor Stan Shreeve, explained the importance of the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy:

“This is a bold document that signals our ambition to create a borough where health and wellbeing are built into everyday life. Health isn’t just about GP’s and hospitals, it’s about the quality of our homes, the work we do and the people and communities that support us. We face significant challenges in the borough, from high smoking rates to poor mental health. This strategy is our commitment to tackle them head on.”

Director of Public Health, Diane Lee, added:

“Healthy life expectancy in North East Lincolnshire is falling, and inequalities are widening. This strategy is about reversing that trend. By working together with partners, businesses, schools and communities, we can create a borough where everyone has the chance to thrive.

“This strategy calls on residents, businesses, organisations and partners in North East Lincolnshire to join forces and make health everyone’s business. Together we can build a future where prevention, fairness and opportunity are at the heart of everything we do.”
