Stories of newfound confidence and emerging opportunities took centre stage as careerShift marked the completion of its second year.

Achievements of local residents were at the heart of the event, with partners, employers and participants coming together for a special celebration hosted by North East Lincolnshire Council’s Adult Careers Service.

The focus was firmly on the personal journeys behind the programme’s success – with many describing the experience as life-changing.

Delivered over eight weeks, careerShift supports residents to build confidence, improve wellbeing, and explore employment opportunities through a mix of employability sessions, physical activity, and personal development.

Helen, who completed the programme earlier this year, reflected on how careerShift helped her rethink her future after decades in work: “After 40 years working in electronics, I thought I was ready for early retirement. But I realised I missed earning a wage and the interaction that comes from being at work. The job market had changed so much, and I didn’t know where to start – it felt quite scary.

“careerShift helped me see my skills in a completely different way. I’ve had support with my CV, rebuilt my confidence, and started applying for roles I never thought I’d consider. I’m now volunteering at a local charity, which has been a really positive step forward.”

Those participants who spoke at the event credited the sessions with helping them find their voice, including Sarah, who said: “Seeing how far I’ve come, and having the confidence to stand at the front right now and talk – when I barely felt I could walk through the door to this programme – shows everything.”

The event showcased not only individual progress, but also the strength of the partnerships that underpin the programme, including GMI Construction, Lincs Inspire, Grimsby Jobcentre and Barclays Bank.

Sandy, from Care Plus Group’s employability services, highlighted the value of this partnership approach: “It’s about introducing people to the support that’s available and helping them build confidence and recognise their transferable skills. When we come to the sessions we look at CVs, job searching, interview techniques – whatever is needed.

“It’s been a fantastic partnership and we’ve seen some really positive success stories, including people moving into work directly from careerShift. It’s exactly the kind of support the local area needs.”

Partnership working with Taking Action Raising Grimsby’s Emerging Talents (TARGET NEL CIC) has also been central to delivery. Their involvement includes leading communication and teamwork sessions and co-running the Careers Café in Freshney Place, where many participants first learn about careerShift. The event also featured a buffet prepared by TARGET volunteers and staff, further reflecting the collaborative and supportive nature of the programme.

The long-term impact of the programme was reflected in Billy’s journey. After taking part in the first cohort, he now helps deliver sessions through his work with TARGET: “It’s a full circle moment. careerShift gave me the confidence and skills to move forward, and now I’m helping others to do the same.”

Krista also spoke at the event. Like Billy, she completed careerShift and now volunteers with TARGET NEL. After 20 years out of work caring for her daughter, she attended the Careers Café, where staff recognised her potential and encouraged her onto the programme. Speaking at the celebration, she said: “Lorraine encouraged me time and time again, even when I thought it wasn’t for me. She kept reminding me of my transferable skills, and she was there all the way.

“To some people it’s just volunteering, but to me, it’s the world. It’s just amazing. There’s a gold pot here that people need to use. I’ve found a new family.”

The programme continues to demonstrate a strong impact. In its second year, 85 participants completed careerShift, with 89 per cent reporting increased confidence and fewer barriers to employment, and 23 people moving into work following completion.

Wendy Trask, Operations Manager for Employability at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “Looking back on the last two years of careerShift, I feel immensely proud of the work the team has put into creating a programme that truly focuses on the individual needs of local people. Skills and training are only one part of it – the real transformation is in confidence and wellbeing.

“From seeing people when they first join to where they are now, they are proof that what we are doing is working. We couldn’t do it without the commitment of everyone involved. I’d also like to say a special thank you to Lorraine and Angela, who facilitate the course – the feedback from participants and the emotion we’ve seen today shows just how important that support and those relationships are.”

The Adult Careers Team reflected on the past year’s achievements and recognised the continued dedication of participants, employers and local organisations who have contributed to the programme’s success.

Special thanks were also given to Focus Independent Adult Social Care, who have provided the space for careerShift over the last two years. Chief Executive Officer Lee Mair said: “It’s been a joy having careerShift here and seeing people reach success. Speaking with them during sessions, hearing their hopes, their fears and their plans for the future – it’s incredibly powerful. They show that you can pick yourself up and take control of your own life.”

Residents can visit the Adult Careers Team and TARGET NEL at the Careers Café throughout the week in Freshney Place.
