A recent Fishing Heritage Centre event aimed at children has gone down a storm with parents and kids alike.

The Children’s Day offered a range of arts and crafts, special challenges and even involved bringing some of the characters at the museum to life.

With Rita the Barmaid, Shirley at the Chippy and Phyllis the net braider, visitors were transported back to 1950s – the height of the fishing industry in Grimsby.

Travelling around the moving deck, the Freeman arms as well as the parts of the famous Ross Tiger, there was plenty to see and do.

After a trawl around, families could take in a slice of cake and coffee in the Galley café too. For those who came, it was a great way to get out the house and see what the town has to offer.

Holly Baker brought step son George, 7, along to learn about Grimsby’s past. She said: “We wanted to bring him (George) to see this and thought today would be a great opportunity.

“I think the Children’s Day is a really clever way to make people think more about the history of the town, but also to get them more involved in everything.”

Dad Tony worked on the Grimsby Docks when he was younger and being in the centre brought old memories flooding back. “It makes me feel sentimental when I’m here. I was a part of all this and this is exactly how I remember it.”

He added: “It’s such an important asset to the town, we can’t let our history be forgotten.”

George was equally excited. “I really like it here and I can’t wait to go on the big ship (Ross Tiger).”

Another family who enjoyed the day was mum Laura Manning and her children Eunice, 7, and Victor, 5. She said: “We saw it was on and wanted to come see what it was all about.

“The activity packs have been great for the kids, it’s kept them entertained along the way.”
