Residents and visitors can now enjoy a transformed community space in the heart of Grimsby, following the completion of public realm improvements by North East Lincolnshire Council.

The project has transformed the triangular site between New Cartergate and Frederick Ward Way from an overgrown and underused area into a safer, more welcoming and accessible space for the local community.

The improvements have created a more open and accessible space with a ground-level maze, new seating, improved lighting, CCTV, and upgraded footpaths, completed with low-level planting that is easy to maintain. Together, these enhancements have created a more open and attractive environment for people of all ages to enjoy.

These changes have created a space to meet with friends either before school or having a lunch break from work. The improvements also support active travel by making walking routes safer and more attractive for those travelling to school, work and leisure destinations.

To celebrate the completion of the project, residents are invited to attend an open event on Friday 26 June, from 2pm to 4pm.

Cycle Hub Grimsby will be on site offering free bike safety checks, while members of the Council’s Traffic and Transport team will be available to discuss future transport and public realm projects taking place across the borough.

Anyone wishing to book a free bike safety check can do so at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/north-east-lincolnshire-council-cycle-hub-32941748313. Drop-in appointments will also be available on the day, although priority will be given to those who have prebooked.

Cllr Paul Batson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Infrastructure and Transport said: “This project has created a space that can be enjoyed by everyone, particularly young people and families travelling to and from local schools and the Horizon Youth Zone. It’s great to see this area transformed into a place that is both practical and welcoming.”
