North East Lincolnshire Council is marking National Marine Week 2026 by celebrating the vital role of the sea in shaping the region’s identity, with a special focus on the much-loved Cleethorpes coastline.
Despite its name, the event actually lasts for 15 to 16 days (from July 25 to August 9 2026) to accommodate the varying tide times and give people the best opportunity to explore the shore at low tide.
From its sweeping sandy beaches to its rich marine habitats, Cleethorpes forms a key part of the Humber estuary, one of the UK’s most important natural environments. This year’s National Marine Week provides an opportunity to highlight both the beauty of the coastline and the ongoing work to protect it for future generations.
Cleethorpes seafront has long been a cornerstone of life in North East Lincolnshire, attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and offering residents a place to connect with nature. As tourism continues to grow, the area remains committed to balancing enjoyment of the coast with environmental responsibility.
The Humber estuary is internationally recognised for its importance to wildlife, supporting migratory birds, marine life, and unique coastal ecosystems. Protecting these habitats is central to local environmental priorities.
North East Lincolnshire Council continues to work with partners, community groups and volunteers to safeguard the coastline. Initiatives include:
- Regular beach cleans led by local volunteers and environmental organisations
- Engaging with visitors and residents on reducing recreational disturbance to wildlife
- Protecting coastal habitats that support biodiversity along the Humber
- Promoting sustainable tourism and responsible seaside visits
These efforts contribute to maintaining high standards across Cleethorpes beach, helping ensure it remains a safe, clean and welcoming destination.
National Marine Week is also about inspiring people to learn more about the ocean and their local marine environment. Throughout the week, residents and visitors are encouraged to:
- Explore the coastline and discover its wildlife
- Learn about the importance of marine conservation
- Support local businesses that value sustainability
Our coastline has changed a lot over the past 100 years. The Cleethorpes Dynamic Understanding of the Natural Environment (DUNE) Project aims to connect more people with our local natural heritage so that it is better understood, respected and enjoyed. This project is made possible with thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
