A young North East Lincolnshire student overcame significant challenges to achieve sporting success.
Callum was recognised at the annual SEND Awards, hosted by North East Lincolnshire Council, which shine a spotlight on the achievements, resilience and talents of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The awards provide an opportunity to celebrate inspiring stories from across the borough and highlight the positive impact of inclusive opportunities and support.
Living with quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Callum faces considerable daily challenges, including limited mobility and communication.
However, his determination, positivity and passion for sport have helped him achieve remarkable success in powerchair football.
Callum is now a first-team player for the Hull Electric Eels, one of the country’s leading powerchair football clubs.
Using a specialist powerchair and joystick controls, he has developed his skills to compete at a highly competitive level.
His commitment to the sport sees him regularly travel around the country for fixtures, tournaments and training camps, demonstrating extraordinary dedication and perseverance.
Callum said: “I’m delighted to have been awarded the SEND award for Sport doing something I love.
“Powerchair football is becoming more popular because it allows players from all backgrounds and disabilities to get involved and have fun. It has also introduced me to a new sport to enjoy, #letsgoeels.”
One of Callum’s proudest achievements came recently when he scored his first goal at a national competition.
His goal helped secure a major victory for his team against previously unbeaten opponents, marking a significant milestone in his sporting journey and showcasing the confidence and ability he has worked so hard to develop.
Beyond his own success on the court, Callum has become a role model for others.
He inspires younger players entering the sport and has supported community events to raise awareness of powerchair football and the opportunities available to disabled young people. His positive attitude and determination to succeed continue to motivate those around him.
