Keeping safe over the bank holiday weekend

11:00 am, Friday, 28th August 2026 - 12 hours ago

Health and wellbeing

People living in North East Lincolnshire are being encouraged to keep themselves safe over the warm bank holiday weekend.

Authorities are asking people to take measures to look after themselves and their families over the extended break.

Deputy director of Public Health in North East Lincolnshire, Geoff Barnes, said:

“Bank holidays often bring lots of people to our borough and to Cleethorpes.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable bank holiday weekend, so we’re taking this opportunity to remind people of the things they can do to keep themselves safe, and what do to if they do either get themselves into difficulty, or see someone in need of help.”

Beach & Coastal Safety

Cleethorpes’ unique tidal range and fast‑moving waters mean conditions can change quickly. Visitors are asked to stay alert and follow safety signage at all times.

Sandbanks

  • If in doubt, don’t go out.
  • Always return to the main beach five hours before high tide to avoid becoming cut off.
  • If cut off by the tide, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately.
  • Daily tide times are available at the Resort Hub opposite the Pier.

Mud Areas

  • Look out for mud warning signs in known risk areas.
  • If you encounter sinking mud: STOP, turn around and retrace your steps.
  • If stuck, stay calm and avoid struggling, as this can make sinking worse.
  • For emergencies, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
