A180 : Work next week, and detailed traffic management for work at Cleethorpe Road Bridge

3:41 pm, Friday, 24th May 2024 - 2 weeks ago

General

Gilbey Road Bridge

There is a final stretch of work to be completed, which includes resurfacing, replacing the expansion joints, fixing drainage gullies and installing the road markings.

This work will be done over extended night closures, from 8pm to 6am each night for up to two weeks from Tuesday 28 May. Whilst this work is happening, the road will be closed completely from Westgate Roundabout to Pyewipe Roundabout, with localised signed diversions in place.

Cleethorpe Road Bridge works

The main bridge deck works will start and traffic management will be installed at Cleethorpe Road Bridge, between Lockhill Roundabout and Riby Square from Thursday 30 May, with a complete closure required on the Thursday night to install the contraflow on the bridge.

From Friday 31 May, traffic will be funnelled into the contraflow on the westbound carriageway in a similar way to how the Gilbey Bridge worked – with the approach roads from each side being funnelled to a single carriageway to filter into the contraflow.

The works will operate in a similar way to the way Gilbey Road Bridge work happened – with work on the eastbound side of the carriageway being done first, followed by the westbound.

Indicative timescale:

Thursday 30 May: bridge closed completely to install the contraflow

Friday 31 May: Works begin on the Eastbound carriageway

By 27 June*: Aim is for works complete to the Eastbound carriageway and traffic management lifted for Armed Forces Weekend.

1-2 July*: bridge closed completely to re-install the contraflow for Westbound carriageway works.

Remainder of July*: Westbound carriageway works

*please note – these dates are indicative, and will depend on weather and progress on site.

DETAILED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT INFORMATION (Cleethorpe Road Bridge)

During the works to the EASTBOUND carriageway (31 May to end June)

Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the westbound side of the bridge.

Flour Square on-slip and Riby Square off-slip will be closed on the north side of the bridge. Access to businesses on the north side of the bridge and the port is from Lockhill Roundabout. HGVs must also use Lockhill Road to access the port.

The short section of Freeman St between Strand St and the A180 will be partially closed. Traffic will be able to turn left from the Westbound direction only into Freeman Street. Eastbound traffic should find alternative routes.

Cleethorpe Road outside Telegraph House will also be accessible from the Westbound direction only.

During the works to the WESTBOUND carriageway: (July for approx. 4 weeks)

Westbound traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound side of the bridge.

Riby Square off-slip will be available to eastbound traffic. HGVs can use Riby Square to access the port as well as Lockhill Roundabout. Flour Square on-slip will be closed for safety.

Additionally, the short section of Freeman Street between Strand St and the A180 will be closed completely to traffic heading both north and southbound. This is to make the area near the works safe.

This means that there will be no entry available to Freeman Street from either side during this phase. Visitors to Freeman Street and Cleethorpe Road outside Telegraph House should use alternative routes.

Public transport

During the works, the bus stops in the vicinity will be suspended and buses diverted locally.

Pedestrian access

Alongside these works, the footbridge over the railway that runs underneath Cleethorpe Road Bridge has been closed. During surveys for the work to the road, it was found that this footbridge needs work to make it safer for pedestrians to use.

We are working through options to do this work, which are likely to involve traffic management (likely to be under traffic lights) on Railway Place, between the end of Cleethorpe Road (the road that passes in front of Telegraph House), and just beyond the other side of the bridge.

Level access between the town centre and Cleethorpe Road is available via Pasture Street.

Cllr Stewart Swinburn, Cabinet member for highways, said: “We need to make sure that these key structures over the main arterial route into and out of our borough are fit to serve for the next 20 years. The traffic has increased phenomenally since they were originally built, and we need to make sure that they’re able to serve our local economy and local people.

“These are critical elements of our highway system in North East Lincolnshire. If these fail, there would be significant impacts, both economically in terms of the amount of trade that use the route, but also for local people going about their everyday lives.”

The works to the structures are being funded mainly through a grant from Government after it recognised the strategic and economic importance of the structures to North East Lincolnshire.

The works are being carried out by VSL on behalf of the Council.
