This World Social Work Day, we’re celebrating the valuable people doing social work in our area, supporting vulnerable children and adults.

In this article, we’re shining a spotlight on social workers who enable vulnerable adults to remain in their homes, or live in support accommodation, whilst receiving much-needed care.

Adults in North East Lincolnshire who are in need of significant care are supported by some-145 social workers, across statutory, voluntary and community services.

Collectively, adult social care workers support more than 10,000 adults, carers and families every year in North East Lincolnshire.

Taking place on Tuesday 17 March, the day highlights the vital role of social work in both adults and children’s care.

The Community Interest Companies (CICs) that the North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) and the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (HNYICB) commission to provide adult social care are key to supporting individuals in our area and empowering them to be as independent as possible.

Stan Shreeve, deputy leader and NELC and portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care, said: “Our adult social care workers change lives, strengthen families and support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Today, we celebrate not just what they do, but the values of dignity, fairness and hope that guide their work all year round.”

John Allen, Adult Principal Social Worker at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “As Principal Social Worker for North East Lincolnshire, I am proud to celebrate World Social Work Day, our social care workforce, and recognise the dedication, compassion and professionalism shown by our teams.

“Every day, social workers across North East Lincolnshire work towards making a meaningful difference in supporting individuals, families and communities through some of life’s most challenging times.

“This year’s theme reminds us of the power of human relationships and our shared commitment to social justice, inclusion and wellbeing. I want to thank all our practitioners for their resilience, skill and unwavering focus on improving lives.”

Lee Mair, CEO, Focus Independent Adult Social Work, added: “This World Social Work Day, Focus stands alongside colleagues from North East Lincolnshire Council, Navigo, Care Plus Group and partners across the voluntary and community sector to celebrate the outstanding contribution of everyone working in social care. Today, is a valuable opportunity to recognise the expertise, compassion and professionalism demonstrated across our workforce every day. I am proud to work in social care, and even prouder to lead Focus and such a capable, values driven team. Their passion and commitment strengthens our local community, helps people to live well and ensures individuals receive the right support at the right time.”

Saffron Dafnias, Social Work Lead at Navigo, added: “Over the last few years, I’ve focused on coaching and mentoring students and newly qualified social workers. I’m passionate about the vital contribution Social Work makes within the NHS, particularly in mental health services. By joining Navigo, I hope to strengthen understanding of the unique perspective social workers bring and highlight the important role they play across our service. My aim is to recruit, train and retain skilled social workers who feel supported and valued. Mental health isn’t just a medical condition or diagnosis but is impacted by wider social issues and an individual’s whole life. Value-based, collaborative and person-centred approach means they’re ideally placed to instil positive change.”

Lisa Revell, Chief Executive at Care Plus Group, said: “On Social Work Day, I want to recognise the extraordinary dedication of our social workers across North East Lincolnshire and within CPG. Your compassion, professionalism, and resilience change lives every day, often in the most challenging circumstances. You stand up for the vulnerable, strengthen families, and build safer communities. On behalf of the organisation, thank you for your unwavering commitment and the difference you make that too often goes unseen. We are proud of you and grateful for all that you do!”

A number of events are taking place in March to recognise our social care workers in our area to celebrate their achievements. This includes various speakers, a webinar and networking event, to celebrate practice, support professional development and forge strong links across our community services.

Over the last five years, our Community Interest Companies have enabled more than 20 local people to begin their journey into Social Work apprenticeships. This investment in home‑grown talent strengthens our workforce and ensures that local services are shaped by those who truly understand and represent the communities we support.
