Jobs, training and volunteering

Adults aged 18 to 24 looking to take the next step into employment are being encouraged to sign up for careerShift BOOST, a free programme designed to build confidence, develop employability skills and help participants get job ready.

Delivered by North East Lincolnshire Council’s Adult Careers Team, the programme consists of four free sessions over two weeks, giving young adults the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to move closer to employment.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Create a CV that stands out
  • Impress employers throughout the recruitment process
  • Develop teamwork and communication skills
  • Build confidence and employability skills
  • Set goals and plan their next steps

Participants also have the opportunity to meet local employers, gain valuable insight into what businesses are looking for and ask questions about the recruitment process. Employers like TK Maxx and Sainsbury’s have supported the programme by sharing practical advice and enlightening conversations about employer expectations for CVs, applications and interviews while offering an insight into career opportunities, progression routes and life in the workplace.

Leo Scott, a participant who has already completed the course, has now found employment with Tesco and credits careerShift BOOST for getting him there: “If anyone is wanting to develop new skills, boost their confidence and generally just feel more fit for the world of work, this is the best way to prepare. I would recommend it to anyone.”

The programme builds on the success of careerShift, which has already supported more than 200 local people to overcome barriers to employment and take positive steps towards work.

Wendy Trask, Operations Manager for Employability at North East Lincolnshire Council and Lead for the Adult Careers Service, said: “Looking for work can feel overwhelming, particularly if you’re unsure where to start. We recognised that some younger people didn’t feel comfortable taking part in the full careerShift groups, so a shorter introductory offer was developed with support from Lorraine, one of our Careers Advisers, who now runs the programme. It has become an important way of helping young people build confidence and prepare for their next steps.

“It’s about much more than writing a CV. Participants will have the chance to develop new skills, meet local employers, build confidence and gain a better understanding of what businesses are looking for. Whether you’re searching for your first job or returning to employment, our team will support you every step of the way.”

Councillor Samuel Grice, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Children and Education at North East Lincolnshire Council, added: “We want everyone in North East Lincolnshire to have the opportunity to reach their potential and feel confident about their future. careerShift BOOST is a fantastic programme that provides practical support, expert advice and encouragement to help young people move into employment.

“I would encourage anyone aged 18 to 24 who is looking for work to take advantage of this free opportunity. The skills, knowledge and employer connections gained through the programme could make all the difference in helping someone begin their career.”

Places on careerShift BOOST are free, but booking is essential. To register your interest, complete the online form at https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/6WsvPasQPb, email careershift@nelincs.gov.uk, or visit the team at the Careers Café in Freshney Place.

Young adults aged 18 to 24 who are claiming benefits and are supported by Grimsby Jobcentre Plus can also continue to access additional help through the Youth Hub at the Careers Café. The service provides tailored support to help young people move into employment, education or training.
