The new the Worshipful Mayor of the borough of North East Lincolnshire has described her appointment as a “great honour”.

Councillor Marian Boyd was elected following a Mayor Making Ceremony at Grimsby Town Hall yesterday evening, Tuesday, 12 May.

The ceremony takes place each year in May, and sees all 42 Councillors elect a Mayor to chair Council meetings for the forthcoming Municipal year.

The role of Mayor in North East Lincolnshire is also a ceremonial one, which will see her visit all corners of the borough, meeting representatives of charities, community organisations and businesses, as well as representing the Council at official functions.

This is the first time Cllr Boyd has held the position of Mayor. Her Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Robson Augusta; her consort David Boyd; Deputy Mayoress Amelia Bateman-Young and the Mayor’s Chaplain will be Reverend Andrew Race.

During the ceremony, she announced her two chosen charities for the year, which is customary of the Mayor, as Bob’s Brainwave and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The former is a charity offering support and advice to those who are suffering or have family members who have been diagnosed with dementia. Founder Chris Suich began the charity after her husband, Bob, was diagnosed with the condition himself.

RNLI is a national charity that help save lives at sea. They do this through life boat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety and education.

Mayor Boyd began her career in 1972 in what was then the Great Grimsby County Borough Council, working in the education department before moving across to work in housing.

Following her time at the Council, she became a lecturer at college, educating students on a range of topics including Human Relations and Performance. In 2022, she was elected Councillor for Park Ward, having lived there for many years.

In her forthcoming mayoral year, she said in a speech thanking those in the room: “Thank you for attending, it has been wonderful to see so many of you come this evening and be here for the ceremony.”
