Two local students are being recognised on a national stage after being shortlisted in the NCFE Aspiration awards, celebrating excellence in education and skills across the UK.

The awards recognise learners, apprentices, educators and organisations who have shown exceptional dedication, achievement and commitment – with students from the TEC Partnership now among this year’s finalists.

One of those finalists is Ela Burton, a Health and Care student at The Academy Grimsby, who has been shortlisted for Learner of the Year.

Ela earned recognition for her outstanding academic achievements, resilience and determination throughout her studies. As well as exceeding expectations in the classroom, she has also shown leadership qualities and a commitment to helping other students succeed.

Earlier this year, Ela began researching the BRCA gene, which can increase the risk of cancer in some people. Her work led to her presenting her findings to a group of professional researchers. Ela now hopes to continue her studies at Franklin before pursuing a career in medicine.

The Academy Grimsby provides a different route into college or employment for young people aged 14-16, offering vocational pathways that help students develop skills, confidence and career ambitions. Over the past two years, staff at The Academy Grimsby have seen Ela grow in confidence within this type of learning environment.

One of her teachers, Taylor-Amy Burgess, said: “Ela truly embodies the spirit of the NCFE Aspiration Awards. Her dedication, growth and positive impact make this recognition incredibly well deserved. We are extremely proud to see Ela shortlisted at a national level.”

Ela also hopes her success will inspire other young people across North East Lincolnshire.

“There is plenty to do here and you don’t need to leave Grimsby to succeed,” she said. “You just have to have a passion for something, and Grimsby can help you get to where you want to be.”

Another local finalist is Sophie Smith, a Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprentice at the Grimsby Institute, who has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year.

Sophie’s nomination recognises her passion for early years education and supporting children’s development, as well as the strong partnership between employer and training provider that has supported her success.

Speaking about being named a finalist, Sophie said: “I am so grateful for this recognition. The nomination wouldn’t have been achievable if it wasn’t for the support of both Sarah and my tutors at the Grimsby Institute. Just to be nominated is such a huge achievement, not just for me but for us as childcare professionals working closely together for the benefit of the children that attend the setting.”

The winners of the NCFE Aspiration Awards will be announced later this year.
