A local student is gaining real-world experience on one of Grimsby’s major town centre development sites, as the regeneration project continues to take shape at Freshney Place.

Toby, a college student working with contractor GMI Construction Group, has been spending time on site as part of his work experience, getting a first-hand look at the different roles involved.

Speaking about his experience, Toby said: “After a tour around the site, I’ve had a look at everything going on. I’ve also learned about the various roles, such as the planner and the apprentice designer, which was quite interesting. I’ve also completed an induction, so I’m cleared for the site.

“I have enjoyed my time here at GMI. Everything I’ve done has been related to my course or something I have a genuine interest in. Overall, I’ve learned a lot, I’ve had fun, and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Toby is currently studying at college and plans to progress onto a Level 4 course after finishing. He says he enjoys the practical side of learning and the sense of achievement that comes from hands-on work.

The experience is supported by GMI Construction Group, a national UK contractor delivering design and build projects across the country. As part of its work on the Freshney Place redevelopment, the company is working with the council to deliver a range of social value activities to support local people into employment and training. This includes creating opportunities for young people through work experience placements, apprenticeships, and site visits for schools and colleges.

The £50 million scheme, commissioned by North East Lincolnshire Council, is transforming Grimsby town centre into a more sustainable, welcoming and modern location. Plans include a new cinema, food and drink outlets, and a refurbished market, designed to improve facilities for residents and visitors.

Young people across North East Lincolnshire can access careers, skills and training support through the Young People’s Support Service (YPSS). The team can be contacted on 01472 326294 (option 1), by email at [email protected], or by text on 07795 976032.
