Graduate Scheme

Here at North East Lincolnshire Council, we are excited to be able to offer a unique opportunity in a multi-team, multi-disciplinary environment for a number of graduates across our organisation. We are passionate about the benefits of our graduate programme both for the individual and our organisation and have seen great success with previous cohorts over the years.

We are seeking candidates who can:

  • develop effective relationships with colleagues and customers
  • strive for excellence
  • behave with integrity
  • work to a high standard
  • be innovative and creative

But above all, we need individuals with a strong ambition and drive for organisational success to help us continue to provide high quality services to the people of North East Lincolnshire.

Each year we have new graduate placements and these are usually advertised in May on our Job vacancy list.

About the programme

At North East Lincolnshire Council we use our graduate scheme as a way to attract new talent back into North East Lincolnshire and bring future leaders into the organisation.

It is a two-year programme which integrates learning and continuous development into the operational job role. We aim to support all of our graduates in securing a position with us at the end of their programme and you will have the opportunity to apply for any internal or external vacancies which arise. The learning and development you gain throughout the programme will be incredibly beneficial in helping you to secure further employment.

Alongside the on-the-job learning, you will also benefit from fantastic networking opportunities with fellow graduate trainees who you can network with, share your experiences, and participate as a group in wider corporate development. We have found from previous graduate cohorts that this networking opportunity can be extremely beneficial and often strong working relationships are forged in the process.

The good things about working for NELC

North East Lincolnshire Council is a brilliant organisation to work for, I thoroughly enjoy my job as it is incredibly varied, and no day is ever the same. The flexible working arrangements we get are brilliant. This means I can start my working day later if I need to and finish later or if I need to finish early on an evening, I can do providing I work the hours I’m contracted to do. It also means there is flexibility in where I work as well. My favourite bit about working for North East Lincolnshire Council though is the people. No workplace can be enjoyable without a great group of people to work with and we have some brilliant people who are always friendly, welcoming, and happy to support you when you need them to. Working with such great people makes the days fly by and makes every day a joy to go to work.

Molly Ward - Business Services Improvement Graduate

I studied Bsc in Psychology at the University of Sheffield, and graduated just this year. My current job role at North East Lincolnshire Council is the Business Services Improvement Graduate within the Practice, Performance, and Quality department, within Children’s Services.

My daily schedules vary hugely as I’m working with three of my colleagues each doing three very different things. Part of my week I’m working within voice and influence at the Council, which is where I’m involved in getting the voice of the child listened to – this includes going to some youth meeting and children in care council meetings on an evening, which is very fun!

I also work on project management bits within my team, this typically involves doing some work on Ofsted Inspections here at the council, and I’m now beginning to project manage some projects going on within Children’s Services which are related to Children’s Social Care. Lastly, on the other end of the scale, I partly work during the week with a data analyst within my core team.

This has so far involved analysing data on Excel and other programs, to then send across to teams within Children’s Services who require them to improve their work. One of the best things about working for North East Lincolnshire Council has to be the ability to take part in flexible working – this is great as it allows me to start and finish at times that work better for me, and of course the ability to work from home a few days in the week!

I also really enjoy the flexibility across different departments, as I’ve so far been working with such a wide variety of people, enabling me to of course meet more people, and make connections too.

Melanie Graves – Graduate Educational Researcher

I studied BA (Hons) Linguistics and Phonetics at the University of Leeds.

Following this, I completed my PGCE with QTS Secondary English at the Institute of Education, UCL. My current job role at North East Lincolnshire Council is Graduate Educational Researcher in the Virtual School and Inclusion Services.

My key responsibilities are largely research based. My primary role is conducting research on Pupil Premium Plus, impact evaluations, and case studies. I am also project manager for the Extension of the Virtual School, a pilot scheme to improve educational outcomes for children in care settings and with a social worker.

My day-to-day involves reading and analysing education policies and feeding back to my team key changes, project planning, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, as well as strategic meetings and panels on exclusions, SEND assessments, and safeguarding. I love working for North East Lincolnshire Council. In the short time I have been here (2 months) I feel like I’ve been involved in a lot of positive, creative, impactful work to help our LA’s most vulnerable children. I really feel like a part of the North East Lincolnshire Council community, which is massively helped by how lovely everyone is!

I love the vast opportunities there are for development. For example, I wanted to join a project in another department on supporting migrants in our LA, and provide the health team with an educational perspective, which I would have never imagined doing in my role before I started.

T Level placements

T Levels are new courses that will start in September 2020. They will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2 year courses have been developed with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work.

T Levels will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and on the job experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days). They will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study or a higher apprenticeship.

If you are currently studying a T Placement and looking for a work placement then please speak to your Higher Education Provider to discuss this. They will have links into our Learning and Development team and we will work with them to try and find a placement which is a good match for your course.
