Port Health

Welcome to the Port Health Authority for Immingham and Grimsby

As the dedicated Port Health Authority for North East Lincolnshire, we play a vital role in protecting public health and supporting the safe, efficient operation of the region’s ports. We work from 2 locations to provide our services. Import services are provided from our Immingham location at the Border Control Post and our Exports office is just up the road at the Innovation Centre, Grimsby. Our work spans a wide range of essential services, including imported food controls, export certification, infectious disease monitoring, and the enforcement of environmental and public health standards.

Inspections are central to what we do. Our officers carry out detailed checks on imported food products to ensure they meet strict safety and quality requirements. This includes verifying accurate labelling, checking for contaminants, and ensuring goods have been transported and stored under the correct conditions.

We also assess non-food items to prevent hazardous materials from entering the supply chain and to ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations.

In addition to goods inspections, we monitor arriving vessels for any signs of infectious disease. Our responsibilities include reviewing Maritime Declarations of Health, carrying out health assessments when required, and working closely with national and local health bodies to manage any potential risks.

Our goal is to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases that could impact our local communities and the wider region. We also carry out ship sanitation inspections and ship based tests to ensure compliance and high standards are maintained.

Our team of Port Health Support Officers, Official Fish Inspectors, and Veterinary professionals works tirelessly to safeguard the food chain, uphold high hygiene and safety standards, and protect public health. Through their expertise and commitment, we help ensure that the region remains resilient, healthy, and well-prepared to respond to emerging risks.

Immingham and Grimsby are strategically significant ports and major gateways for international trade. Our role is essential in enabling goods to move safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with UK and international legislation, and maintaining the health and safety standards expected of modern, high-volume ports.

Thank you for visiting our pages. We remain committed to serving the community and ensuring that our ports continue to operate as safe, healthy, and thriving centres of activity.
