The Blue Flag will be flying high once again in Cleethorpes as the resort’s Central beach, from Wonderland through to the leisure centre, has secured the prestigious international award for water quality.

Cleethorpes Central beach joins the country’s very best beaches, from popular holiday spots to quiet, more hidden-away spots. And the good news is that every single one of them is on the ‘green list’ for this summer, proving that you don’t need to jet off to Europe or even further afield to visit some of the best beaches in the world – they’re right here on our doorstep.

What unites all the Blue Flag award winners is knowing that they represent clean and safe beaches and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.

In addition to securing the Blue Flag status for the 2021 season, Cleethorpes has also Seaside Awards for beaches of the local Nature Reserve beyond the leisure centre and at Humberston Fitties for their fantastic facilities and cleanliness.

Along with our year-round projects to protect beaches and waterways, and working with the community to keep the beach clean, today’s announcement is part of our ongoing commitment to make sure Cleethorpes stays as one of the best beaches in the UK for everyone to enjoy.

Cllr Callum Procter, the Council’s Cabinet member for tourism said: “I am delighted with the news that Cleethorpes has once again been given this prestigious award. It reflects the hard work and dedication of staff to maintain consistently high standards.

“The award act as a guarantee to tourists that the beach they are visiting meets international water quality tests and that the facilities are well managed safe and welcoming.”

He added: “I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who has worked hard to help us achieve these awards. So many community groups and council departments contribute, along with the many facilities in and around the resort that make it such a pleasant place to visit.

“One of our aims as council, particularly in the wake of the last year, is to increase visitor numbers to Cleethorpes and this prestigious award can only strengthen this objective.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, we are going to be relying on our country’s beautiful beaches to escape for a much-needed break after all the stresses and strains of the past year.

“Whether it’s camping in Cornwall, renting a cottage in North Yorkshire or simply having a day out at the seaside in Sussex, a fantastic beach is an essential part of a holiday for so many of us.

“Last year, due to the pandemic, we did not have the opportunity to celebrate all the great award-winning beaches around the coast so this year we are delighted to have even more winners than we did in 2019, thanks to the incredible work of the teams around the country that make our beaches clean and safe for us all to enjoy.

“From environmental education for the local community and ensuring responsible beach use, to cleaning regimes and an increasing number of recycling facilities, it is a full-time commitment to create beaches worthy of these awards.

“As we all plan our 2021 holidays much closer to home, thanks to the Blue Flag and Seaside Award those choosing to holiday at a destination with an award-winning beach can be assured it will be clean and safe and meet the highest standards for water quality and management.”

The awards are administered in England by Keep Britain Tidy and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE.)
