General

Planning permission for the major restoration of Corporation Road Bridge has been accepted by the planning authority.

Work is now expected to start late July/early August, once the contract has been awarded.

This includes the key structural works, as well as the improvements to the aesthetic changes to the bridge, as part of the full refurbishment.

The vital refurbishment works will protect the landmark for many years to come and preserve its heritage status.

The entirety of this refurbishment will take up to 18 months to complete, during which time Corporation Road Bridge will be closed to all vehicles with diversion routes clearly signed. The bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, except during short periods when the contractor will need to test the lifting mechanisms and the bridge will need to be fully closed.

As part of its Grade 2 listed heritage status, it is important the bridge remains functioning and the mechanics are in full operation to ensure the council is satisfying the statutory obligations.

The Corporation Bridge refurbishment is a £4.967m scheme – funded by £2.967m from the Department for Transport, £1.83m set aside by the Council and a further £170,000 from the Local Transport Fund. The Department of Transport funding is specifically ringfenced for these works.
