Your routes into children’s social work

Want a career where you can transform children’s lives? There are several ways to qualify as a social worker – and choosing your placement with us means you’ll learn in a supportive environment, grow your skills, and often secure a permanent role.

Study a Social Work England approved degree – usually three years full time. You’ll combine classroom learning with real world placements. Choose NELC for your placement and you’ll find there’s always someone to support and encourage you. Local courses are available at the University of Hull, the University of Lincoln and, coming soon, Grimsby Institute.

You’ll need: 3 A-levels (or equivalent), GCSEs in English and Maths (grade 4/C or above) and some relevant experience preferred.

Already have a degree? A two-year master’s in social work could be your next step. We welcome postgraduate students for placements from all walks of life, from teachers and teaching assistants to legal and business support. Courses are available at Hull and Lincoln.

You’ll need:  Any undergraduate degree (usually 2:2 or above), GCSEs in English and Maths (grade 4/C or above) and relevant experience.

Want to earn while you learn? Our three-year Social Work Degree Apprenticeship lets you work for NELC while studying for your degree. You’ll spend time in Children’s Services and complete off the job learning with the University of Lincoln.
You’ll need: Maths and English GCSEs (grade 4/C or above), one year’s experience in social care and a driving licence.

This sought-after fast-track programme is for graduates with experience supporting children, young people or families. NELC is a regional partner, and we provide placement opportunities and mentoring throughout the 14month course.
You’ll need: Minimum 2:2 degree in any subject, six months’ experience with children, families, or vulnerable adults and GCSE English (grade 4/C or above).

If you’ve qualified before and want to come back, we offer support to refresh your skills and regain registration.
You’ll need: Previous social work qualification and you must be eligible to re-register with Social Work England.

Choose NELC as a supportive place for you to develop and grow during your ASYE.
Our ASYE programme gives you the confidence, support and space to develop into the social worker you want to be.
Governed by the Department for Education, our ASYE provides structured development, meaningful support, and opportunities to grow at your pace.
