“We care about Cleethorpes”: New street team determined to make resort shine

Bins, waste and recycling

A new group will be working tirelessly this Summer to make sure Cleethorpes is the place to be this Summer.

The latest Street Scene Operatives will be doing all sorts from emptying bins to picking up litter during the warmer period with increased footfall set to lead to more waste than normal.

The four of them will have their own sections in and around the seaside resort to take care of, armed with their trusty litter pickers and hi-vis jackets.

Dedicated to making a difference, these roles will be crucial in making sure the town is kept clean for residents and visitors over the next few months.

Heading up the team is Bill Dawson who has now been taking on permanently. He said: “I’ve been doing this sort of thing for 22 years now.

“I really enjoy the work, but the people I work with make it even more rewarding. We’re just like one big family and we all take pride in what we do.”

For others, it’s about more than just picking up cans and chip paper. “I love it because it gets you out in the sunny weather,” said Mark Wynne.

“You also find that you help a lot of people too. Often, we’ll get asked for directions or something like that so it’s more than just picking up litter.

“I helped during the Winter in Grimsby too, it just keeps me going and you always have a laugh with the people you’re working with.

“Ultimately, we’re doing some good by keeping the resort clean and enjoying it at the same time.”

Sean Callaghan also enjoys getting out and about, but this is quite the change from his previous career. “I used to travel all over the country repairing roads, but because of that I rarely got to see my friends and family.

“Now, I spend more time at home with everyone and get to see people I haven’t seen in ages.”

Lindsey Maddison is thrilled to be working in her home town and takes great pride in what she does. “I love where we live and I hate seeing litter on the streets so this job lets me make a positive difference.

“I’m willing to help in any way I can to make the area a better place for everyone.” She added: “Being a woman doesn’t phase me either. Everyone gets treated the same and we all help each other out where we can.”

Councillor Bob Callison, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Energy Security, added: “It’s great to have these extra bodies out and about keeping Cleethorpes clean.

“Whilst people shouldn’t leave litter we know they do. The work these people do often goes unnoticed but they’re key in making the Summer season a successful one.”

He added: “I would also like to remind people that litter should go in the bin and if the bins are full, please take your rubbish home with you.”
