Careers, education, training and employment
Young People’s Support Services (YPSS), based at the Molson Centre Grimsby (Thesiger Street entrance – the side door where the green railings are) supports young people aged 13-19 (or 25 for those with additional needs) with information, advice and guidance about careers, further education, training and employment.
School age young people
Individual schools/academies are responsible for arranging independent and impartial careers guidance for the majority of students however YPSS will arrange to see some students between years 9 and 11 depending on their individual circumstances, for example young people with an Education Health Care Plan or children who are looked after by the local authority. If you have not met your careers adviser in school, you don’t attend school or would like to organise a careers appointment outside of school please contact YPSS. A careers interview can be undertaken in a variety of ways at a variety of venues, for example 1:1 appointments, telephone calls or through Microsoft teams meetings.
After you leave school
YPSS have a team of NEET Practitioners who support unemployed young people aged 16-18 (up to 25 if you have an active Education Health Care Plan or are/have been Looked After by the Local Authority) with finding and moving into suitable provision.
Making important decisions about your future can be difficult and if the plans that you had have not worked out it can be hard to think about what other options you may have. Or, if you have a problem that is preventing you from getting where you want to be it can be hard to know where to find support. This is where YPSS NEET Practitioners can help.
NEET Practitioners can offer:
- One-to-one mentoring support over a period of time to help you get to where you want to be and overcome any problems that stop you accessing work/training.
- Information, advice and guidance on college courses, training and job opportunities and how to access these.
- Support with how to apply for jobs (application forms, preparing a CV, covering letters, interview skills/techniques).
- Access to a level 6 qualified Careers Adviser if you need some specialist information/advice on routes into specific careers paths or vocational areas.

Lincs2 is a comprehensive one-stop online prospectus that provides details of the vast majority of qualifications, courses, training providers and placement opportunities in North East Lincolnshire. It is for all learners who want to study or train in North East Lincolnshire either full-time or part-time.
National Careers Service
The National Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance to help you make decisions on learning, training and work opportunities. Visit the website for support with anything and everything from pathways after 13 years old, CV and interview support and the skills you need to succeed. You can also chat to someone online.

Learn Direct
Learn Direct is a leading provider of technology-led training, including adult skills, employability and apprenticeships, and eAssessment services. Their website is useful for UK wide work placements, internships, and apprenticeships in the around the UK. Their website is useful for any student that is looking for an internship before going to university, or in between the summer months,
North East Lincolnshire Council 14-19 work experience
This offers a range of work experience opportunities to students from local secondary schools and colleges. This allows the council to raise young people’s awareness of the range of job opportunities in the council and for young people to gain an overview of working in different council teams. If you are interested in a placement in NELC we recommend you contact your schools careers advisor or work experience co-ordinator who will pass your details onto the council.
Med Shed
Developed by and hosted with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH), in partnership with Hull University and NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, this site is for young people aged 11 to 16, introducing them to potential NHS careers.

UK and international jobs
- Employment for students – This is a national student website is for students who want to make money whilst they study. It is the number one website used by students.
- Student jobs – This is a national student website which has work placements, graduate jobs, and permanent posts. It is useful for anybody that is looking for a job, but not just part time.
- Indeed – Is a jobs website, which offers a search tool for local positions.
Working abroad and gap year
- Real Gap – Gap year and student travel adventure specialists.
- Ripple Africa – Volunteering and training in Africa
- I to I – Teaching English as a foreign language, teaching internships, and adventure travel.
- Non Stops Now – Ski instructor courses, snowboard instructor courses, a ski or snow career break, gap year or holiday.
- Raleigh international – Engaging young volunteers from around the world on two delivery programmes; Expedition and International Citizen Service (ICS). Schemes including water, sanitation and hygiene, use of natural resources, building the resilience of communities, and youth leadership.
Volunteering
Volunteering or getting involved in local decision making are great ways to gain experience, whether that’s in a local charity shop, an internship, or helping with a project at home or abroad.

If you are thinking about volunteering locally or are already involved, the local Volunteer Centre should be your first point of call.
Youth Action
Giving young people a voice and a role in making a difference in the community.
Youth Action is the local youth council for young people aged 13 to 21, where all members are voluntary. The group works on a number of projects which includes the annual consultation of young people’s priority issues – Your Voice, Your Vote (this year tackling feeling safe on our streets and mental health).
Regular once monthly meetings take place at Grimsby Town Hall, with guests such as senior council managers and councillors attending, to share important discussions about topical issues for young people in our local area.
During each of the meetings we bring a number of opportunities that young people may be interested in taking part in which include national advisory groups, regional projects or local opportunities. So young people can get involved in making a difference and representing young people locally regionally and nationally. You will build skills and experience such as organisational skills, communication and problem solving which are great for your portfolio’s and CV’s as many of the skills are needed for any job.
Youth Action is now looking to recruit new members to join the council and to contribute to meaningful issues in North East Lincolnshire. This is also a wonderful opportunity to build skills and experience for portfolio’s and CV’s, needed for jobs in the future.
