People in North East Lincolnshire are picking up the phone and enquiring about becoming a foster carer, according to one leading Councillor.
Councillor Margaret Cracknell, portfolio holder for children and education at North East Lincolnshire Council, has revealed that the local authority received 15-enquiries from people interested in fostering during September alone.
The figures have been published on the back of a significant campaign to recruit new foster carers.
“Officers have done an incredible amount of work in recent months to recruit new foster carers.
“In the last five months alone, the Council has launched the foster-friendly business initiative in North East Lincolnshire, and recruited almost 40-local businesses, charities and schools to the cause.
“They are out there every day working with local organisations to promote fostering.
“Becoming a foster carer is a truly wonderful opportunity to really transform the life of a local child, and I know there are a lot of people out there who want to support our young people.
“All of this work has resulted in a dramatic rise in the number of local people who are interested in fostering. In September alone we saw a new enquiry every two days, and that is fantastic.
“To people who aren’t familiar with fostering, 15 may not sound like a significant number, but that means that 15-children can be placed into safe, loving homes with carers who really want to support them.
“In some cases, where a child in care has been living outside of North East Lincolnshire, it may mean that they can return to the live in this area, near their friends and their home community, and that is fantastic.
“I’d like to thank officers in children’s service for their work, and those businesses and organisations that have signed up to our foster friendly business scheme for supporting this campaign.”
As part of an ongoing campaign to recruit foster carers, the Council is hosting a Facebook Live Q&A on Wednesday 9October from 5:30pm where people will have the opportunity to put their questions to a foster carer and a social worker in the fostering team.
