North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, has recently completed the first phase of a programme of expansion and refurbishment works to Beacon Academy in Cleethorpes.

The works focussed on bringing the academy’s existing sports hall back in into use for curriculum activity giving the site a safe and enjoyable indoor activity space which encourages students to embrace learning in a fit for purpose environment.

Enabling works to the sports hall included, replacing the roof, repairing the damaged sports hall floor, replacing ceiling and flooring in the entrance corridor, redecoration works throughout the building and new LED lighting.

Jason Thurley, Headteacher at Beacon Academy said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in the project including Christine Scott (NELC), the council’s partner ENGIE, and our sponsor; the Wellspring Academy Trust. Their hard work and support has created a fantastic sports hall for the young people at Beacon Academy, I know our PE team are looking forward to using the facility.

“This is another moment in an exciting time for our academy, following our ‘Good’ OFSTED report in 2020, we are now heavily over-subscribed for September 2021 entry and we are committed to taking our site and facilities to the next level.”

In addition to the new sports facility, another phase of works at the academy is currently on site, as refurbishment works to create a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) teaching unit are underway and due for completion later this year.

The site will further benefit from a £1.8M Salix grant awarded through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial strategy (BEIS) and being managed by ENGIE for the council. The works will include upgrading the existing heating systems, installing renewable technologies to create greener, energy efficient, more carbon neutral buildings and are due for completion later this year.

There are further phases of building works to follow throughout the site as there is a need to expand secondary  provision within the Cleethorpes area of the borough.  The next phase of the scheme will refurbish the site providing the academy with fit for purpose buildings through the extending and redesigning the existing facilities to increase the pupil capacity of the site and improving the learning environment for both students and staff.

Councillor Ian Lindley, portfolio holder for children, education and skills at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “I’m really pleased to see these works progressing nicely and I’m thrilled for the school and the staff and students that will get the use the new space that has been completed.

“We’re keen to ensure that students in our area have access to the best facilities and the best spaces to learn and grow.”

The refurbishment works were commissioned by North East Lincolnshire Council and managed on its behalf by ENGIE, with local contractors Eton-Lincs Ltd Trading as ABM Roofing and TopCon Building Ltd. completing the works.
