Register a birth
Congratulations on the birth of your baby!
This information is for parent(s) of a new born baby only.
A baby’s birth must be registered, by law, within 42 days of the baby’s arrival, and registered within the district where the birth occurred. At the North East Lincolnshire register office, birth registration is available by appointment only – so please telephone the office to arrange an appointment first.
Important changes for unmarried couples – parental responsibility – please read the information to this page before contacting the register office to make an appointment to register the birth of your child.
Who can register a baby’s birth?
If the natural mother and natural father of the child were married to each other at the time of the birth, either parent may attend to register.
If the natural mother and natural father are not married to each other at the time of the baby’s birth but wish to record both parent’s details then both parents must attend.
Baby’s natural mother, if not married to the father, may register the birth alone but she will not be able to record the father’s details unless a statutory declaration of parentage or relevant court order is produced – telephone or email the registrar for further advice.
If the parents are civil partners and had formed their legal civil partnership prior to the assisted conception of the child, then either parent may attend to register.
For same sex couples who are not civil partners but had entered into a parenthood agreement prior to assisted conception at an approved fertility clinic within the United Kingdom, if the second parents details are to be recorded on the birth certificate, both parents must attend.
What is needed to register a birth?
The following information is required:
- Baby’s date and place of birth, forenames and surname
- Mother’s full name, date and place of birth, current or last occupation, if applicable, maiden surname, and date of marriage
- Father’s full name, date and place of birth and his current or last occupation
Birth certificates: what do parents receive?
Please note: this information relates to the birth of a new born baby only
With effect from 1st November 2017, free short birth certificates will no longer be issued to you. If you do not wish to purchase the standard birth certificate for £4.00, the registrar is able to issue you with a “Certificate of Registration” by way of receipt that the birth has been registered. This will only show the date of birth and sex of the child. This cannot be used for any legal or official purposes.
A ‘standard’ birth certificate may also be obtained once the registration has been completed. This certificate will show all the details that have been recorded in the register. There is a fee of £4 charged for this certificate, if requested at the time of the registration. If you require a passport for your baby it is necessary to obtain the standard certificate. The standard certificate is available at a later date but the fee increases. In an open register the certificate can be purchased for £7. Once the register is closed and in the custody of the superintendent registrar the cost is £10 for each certificate.
If you have lost a certificate and require a replacement, details on how to obtain one can be found on our replacement certificate page.
