Extra Care Housing
Extra Care Housing (ECH) schemes provide housing support on-site for people 55 years and over as their needs increase (or younger people by exception). 24/7 emergency care support and planned care packages are provided by the onsite care staff; however, where a resident prefers, they can choose a different external care provider for planned care. This support helps residents stay in their own home, whilst enjoying a good quality of life. It combines support and independence with safety and security, meaning people do not have to move as circumstances changes.

Register your interest
Those wishing to move into an extra care housing scheme can have their interest registered in a few different ways:
- Fill in an expression of interest form: Collect the form from the ECH scheme or download them (found above on this webpage), and return when completed.
- Contact the Single Point of Access (01472 256 256) to request an assessment for ECH.
- Any professional (social worker, support at home worker, community nurse, etc) can make a referral on an interested person’s behalf with their consent for ECH.
Each route above will trigger an assessment to gather information about the person’s current situation. The assessment will over the full suite of a person’s care and housing needs (physical needs, emotional and mental health needs and social needs).
The completed assessments are considered at a monthly panel and those who meet the ECH criteria will be placed on the waiting list for an apartment. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the panel by letter.
Successful applicants will be placed on NEL’s extra care housing waiting list. Applicants who are not placed on the waiting list can reapply if their needs change.
After you have been accepted
If someone on the waiting list has stated they only want to be considered for a specific scheme, we’ll only consider them for available apartments in that specific location.
Apartment allocations are decided by a panel once apartments become vacant. This panel reviews all applications and looks at the overall needs of people waiting for housing in each scheme. They then recommend individuals to the housing provider (the landlord), based on:
- How urgent their need is
- How well the apartment matches their requirements (e.g. ground floor, number of bedrooms)
- The potential benefits of the move for the person
This helps make sure that apartments go to the people who are most in need and best suited to the available homes.
Once someone is selected, the housing provider will formally offer them the tenancy and arrange everything needed for them to move in at an agreed time.
