Over the last few months, local schools in our area have been working to become asthma friendly.

On 1st July the scheme was launched over an online meeting and all schools in attendance were entered into a raffle to win two emergency asthma inhaler kits.

Orchard Education in Grimsby won the kits and are now very close to being an accredited Asthma Friendly school. Jodie (a staff member at Orchard), said:

“These kits have helped us to work towards our goals of becoming accredited, we are so close now and it is an achievement to have nearly all of our staff members trained.”

Schools must meet seven standards to become accredited. Orchard is on track to meet all seven and have had more than 85% of their staff complete the asthma awareness and education training.

The school has also launched a coffee morning to further support parents and carers of pupils with asthma, helping to raise awareness, share useful information and strengthen the support available to children with asthma while they are at school.

The Asthma Friendly Schools accreditation programme in North East Lincolnshire is coordinated through NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, working with local partners.

Since June, the team at Centre4 have created a working group for any school in North East Lincolnshire to join. All education settings are welcome to take part and there are currently over 20 in the group. The group provides an opportunity to share information and support education settings to gain accreditation.

Schools across North East Lincolnshire can take part in the Asthma Friendly Schools accreditation completely free of charge, with support available to help them work towards achieving the seven standards. Schools can reach out to Centre4 if they need assistance or advice.

Ann Marie Matson, Director of children’s Services, has said “I am pleased that so many schools have decided to take part in the accreditation, this is a positive step for the children with asthma, and it will help to provide reassurance to parents and carers whilst their children are at school.”
