The Worshipful Mayor the Borough of North East Lincolnshire is preparing for his biggest challenge ever.
Councillor Steve Beasant will be walking for 24 hours around Grant Thorold Park from 10am on Saturday, 27 July, to 10am on Sunday, 28 July, to help raise funds for four chosen charities.
He will be donating any funds he receives to:
- Nurtrio
- Friendship at Home
- Jax’s Stoma Charity
- YMCA Humber
Both Nurtrio and Friendship at Home are very close to Mr. Mayor’s heart, with the pair looking his wife Carol. “These two charities do an incredible job with Carol. After a recent diagnosis, she needs much more help and they are doing a wonderful job of supporting her.”
He added: “As an East Marsh ward councillor, the YMCA are important to me and they look after some of the most vulnerable people in the borough so deserve all the help we can give them. As for Jax, what more can you say, he is a wonderful young boy who is doing a great thing.”
Although he has no specific figure in mind, Councillor Beasant is hoping to raise over a thousand pound. “The more we can raise the more we can help these charities so I’m hoping we can get them a good amount.”
When asked about his preparation for the event, he said: “I do nearly 20,000 steps a day and I’m thinking I’ll manage over 100,000 steps over the course of the walkathon.
“Despite being a 71-year-old, I think I’m fairly fit and healthy. However, I know this will be a big challenge for me and I will need plenty of time to recover afterwards.
“In the past, I’ve cycled from the Houses of Parliament to Grimsby, but now even the Grimsby 10k is a struggle for me, this will be my biggest challenge yet. I’m just hoping I don’t get cramp!
“When they tell me I’ve completed it I know it’ll be an amazing feeling, especially for someone of my age.”
