Armed forces
If you’re serving in the armed forces or are the spouse/partner of someone who is, you can register as a service voter.
If you have a fixed address within the UK you can register to vote as normal and apply for a postal vote.
What you need:
- National Insurance number
- service number
Crown servant
A Crown Servant is someone employed overseas in the civil service or diplomatic service. Being a Crown servant or the spouse/partner of someone who is means you can have a special registration.
If you have a fixed address within the UK you can register to vote as normal and apply for a postal vote.
What you need:
- National Insurance number
- payroll or staff ID number
Overseas
To be an overseas voter you must be a UK citizen living abroad and been registered to vote in UK general elections and referendums for the last 15 years.
If you were young to be on the electoral register when you left the UK, you can still be an overseas voter as long as you’re 16 and your parent or guardian were registered in the UK.

No fixed address
You’re still within your rights to be on the electoral register and vote if you have no fixed address or are homeless. To register you must be able to provide an address where you regularly stay or have a connection with.
A no fixed address includes:
- living in a movable property (boat or caravan)
- you’ve been remanded in custody
- patient within a mental health hospital
