Young people in North East Lincolnshire are set to get further support with careers, training and wellbeing with the launch of a new Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Youth Hub – the first of its kind in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Based at the Careers Café in Freshney Place, the Youth Hub will provide one-to-one support for people aged 18 to 25 who receive benefits and are supported by Grimsby Jobcentre Plus, helping them gain the skills, confidence and opportunities needed to move into work, education or training.
This is one of 180 Youth Hubs opening across England. The aim is to make sure young people can get support close to where they live and can reach it by public transport.
The Youth Hub will bring local services together in one place, focusing on areas that young people say matter most to them, including:
- Skills, careers and training
- Wellbeing support
- Money and budgeting
- Housing
As part of its existing offer available to all residents, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Adult Careers Service will provide careers information, advice and guidance, helping young people explore opportunities and take their next steps.
For those interested in accessing the hub, please ask your Work Coach at Grimsby Job Centre for more details.
The Youth Hub will be delivered from the Careers Café, run by Taking Action Raising Grimsby’s Emerging Talents (TARGET NEL CIC) and North East Lincolnshire Council’s Adult Careers Team.
Since it opened in October 2025, the Careers Café has become a welcoming place for the community, helping over 1,300 people with CVs, job applications, training and using computers. Staff at the café also understand that finding a job can be hard – some people may feel low in confidence, need childcare, or want a new career, and the team works with other organisations to give extra help and advice in these areas.
Wendy Trask, Operations Manager for Employability at North East Lincolnshire Council and Lead for the Adult Careers Service, welcomed the announcement.
She said: “We know that every young person’s journey is different, and sometimes finding work or training is about much more than simply applying for a job. It’s about having the confidence, support and opportunities to take that next step.
“This investment is a real opportunity for young people in North East Lincolnshire. By working closely with local partners, we can provide personalised support that helps people realise their potential and build brighter futures.”
Councillor Samuel Grice, Deputy Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Children and Education, said: “We are delighted that Grimsby has been chosen as the home of the first Youth Hub in the Yorkshire and Humber region. This is a significant investment in our young people and demonstrates our commitment to helping every young person access opportunities to learn, earn and succeed.
“The Youth Hub will provide practical support, advice and encouragement for those who may be unsure about their next steps. I would encourage any young person who is looking for guidance, training or employment support to come along and see what is on offer.”
The Youth Hub will officially launch on Wednesday 1 July, with a special ‘National Employability Week’ event at the Careers Café the following week.
