Pay your Council Tax



There are a few ways you can pay your Council Tax. You can check your own account and payments online, by using our Council Tax balance online service.


Direct debit

Direct debit is the easiest way to pay your council tax. To set up a direct debit you can either:

Direct debit payments can be made on the 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd of the month. Payments are normally made over 10 months from April to the following January. You can request these payments to be spread over 12 months when you apply or by contacting us by email or phone. Payments made by direct debit are protected by the Direct debit guarantee .


Pay online

To pay Council Tax online complete the Council Tax payment  form.

You will need your account reference number and debit or credit card details.

The amount shown when you enter your reference will be the total balance on your account and not always the amount that is due. You can manually enter the amount you need to pay at this time.

To avoid paying online each month you can set up a direct debit by calling 0300 3030164, option 5.


Pay by phone

To pay by telephone call 0300 3030164 and select option 1 any time of the day. You can pay by debit or credit card.

You must have your account reference number and card details to do this.


Other ways to pay

We are aware that some people are experiencing problems paying their council tax bills at Paypoint outlets or the Post Office. You can make a payment online or by phone as detailed above. Alternatively, you can call us on 0300 3030164, option 5 and request a replacement bill.

To pay this way you need to take your bill to a post office or pay point shop. A full list of pay point shops can be found on the allpay  website. Find your nearest Post Office on branch finder. Please keep your receipt as proof of payment.

You must arrange this with your own bank.

  • Ensure that only your account reference number is quoted (as shown on your bill)

If you bank online, you can use your own bank’s facilities to make a payment online.

Payment due dates

There are four payment dates possible depending on your payment method.

  • Monthly payments are made on either the 1st or 15th of the month
  • Direct debit payments can be made on the 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd of the month

New payments are usually set up for the 1st of the month. To change this please contact the Council Tax team.

Notices will be issued if payment is not received by the due date. If you do not pay on time the option to pay by instalments may be taken away.


Lost council Tax bills

If you have lost your bill please call 0300 3030164 option 5 to request another copy.


Council Tax e-billing

You are now able to get your council tax bills online.

Opting to view your bill online is quick, safe and secure and means you can see your bill as soon as it is available. Once you have signed up, you will be sent an email every time a new bill is produced for you.

All your bills are safely stored in one place – no more lost pieces of paper.

If you do need a paper version, you have the option of printing it at home.

Opting for e-billing also helps the environment by saving on paper, printing and delivery resources.

gn up you will need to have your last Council Tax bill in front of you, to give us your:

  • Council Tax account number (this is on your bill above the barcode)
  • Name as shown on the bill
  • Postcode

To sign up now complete the Council Tax e-billing form.

Once your completed form is received by us, it will be validated against your Council Tax account and you will then be sent an email asking you to activate your e-Billing account. You will also have to request a one-time only PIN code.

When you sign into your account you will be able to see your latest Council Tax bill.

If you have already signed up for e-Billing you can view your account online.

You will have to request a one-time PIN code to be able to access your account.

Can’t afford to pay your bill

Do not ignore our letters. Contact us as soon as possible if you are struggling to pay your Council Tax or are behind with your payments.

If you contact us now we can discuss what you owe and how this can be paid in a way that helps you. If you do not pay your bill the situation will only get worse.

If you are having difficulties paying your Council Tax then contact us to give us a chance to help.

You should also check if you are eligible for money off your Council Tax bill. This could happen if you:

  • are the only bill paying adult in your home
  • are on a low income or get benefits
  • a household member has a disability or sever mental impairment
  • you are an apprentice, student or young person in training
